  2. Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier met in 1975
  3. in a fight that Muhammad called the "Thrilla
  4. in Manila" (Manila is the capital of the
  5. Philippines). The bout was one of the most
  6. exciting fights in history. Muhammad con-
  7. trolled the early rounds, then Joe dominated
  8. the middle rounds. But in the 12th round,
  9. with both warriors nearly exhausted,
  10. Muhammad somehow regained the edge,
  11. battering Joe through the next two rounds.
  12. When a weary "SmokinΓÇÖ Joe" couldnΓÇÖt answer
  13. the bell for the final round, Muhammad was
  14. declared the winner. The faces of both
  15. fighters were badly beaten. Later, Muham-
  16. mad said of the fight, "It was like death.
  17. Closest thing to dyinΓÇÖ that I know of."
